A journal of two families trying to eat local pacific northwest foods for the month of August.

Why? To bring awareness, to support local farms and business, to eat healthier, try new foods...

Day One - 8/1/10

This is day one of eating local. Tim made blackberry oat bars with oats from the Northwest and hand picked blackberries from the neighborhood. Jill made a blackberry and blueberry crumble using more of the blackberries and locally grown blueberries.

This is prime blackberry picking time. You can find blackberries everywhere. Most of the time people work very hard to rid them from the garden. I think the best place to find them are in areas that are not well tended. Look for them in the nearest vacant lot or even along the side of the road. Remember to wash them. Tim said there are many along the Burke Gilman trail in Fremont.

  1. Looks awesome you guys! Bob and I discussed trying to do this in August as well. I think we need a little more time to get educated on ND options before we embark...thanks for nudging us to start at thinking about eating locally. (or course, locally will have to include MN because I am not ready to give up beer)

  2. Makes sense for you to use Minnesota. You can't just eat sugar beats, wheat and oil.
